Water Birth

Water Birth at Mathi Hospital

Introduction

Water births have gained appreciation in recent years. At Mathi Hospital, we offer this beautiful and safe birthing option. Water birthing is giving birth in a tub of warm water under medical supervision. It is considered gentler for the baby and less stressful for the mother. Only healthy mothers with specific criteria are suitable for water birth.

Criteria for Water Birth

  • Weight under 100 kgs
  • Baby head down
  • Healthy mother able to get out of the pool quickly
  • Normal blood pressure, temperature, and pulse
  • Contracting without intravenous medication
  • No history of seizures

Benefits of Birthing in Water

  • Less painful contractions and reduced need for analgesia
  • Shorter labour and feelings of control
  • Supports mobility and conserves energy
  • Reduces perineal tearing and softens pelvic floor muscles
  • Gentler birth experience for the baby and immediate breastfeeding possible

Risks and Suitability

For healthy women with uncomplicated pregnancies, risks are rare. Water birth is suitable for mothers between 37-42 weeks, with normal pregnancy, spontaneous labour, and strong contractions.

Pain Relief

Water provides effective pain relief. Women may choose to use the pool for comfort and give birth outside. Other coping strategies like massage, breathing exercises, or Entonox can be combined. Pain-relieving injections require leaving the pool.

Water Temperature

The water temperature is monitored carefully: 36.5–37°C during the first stage and 37.5°C during birth. Midwives check your temperature, the water, and room hourly. Hydration is encouraged.

Birth Process

Giving birth in water is hands-off with verbal guidance from the midwife. The baby is gently brought to the surface immediately after birth to avoid inhaling water. Babies are usually calm and healthy. Delivery of the placenta typically occurs out of the water.

Reasons to Leave the Pool

  • Use of the toilet
  • Difficulty monitoring baby's heart rate
  • Vaginal examination (if necessary)
  • Abnormal maternal vital signs
  • Labour not progressing as expected
  • Delivery of the placenta

Care During Labour and Birth in Water

We maintain a calm, relaxed atmosphere. The baby’s heart rate and your vital signs are monitored. Labour support is provided by a midwife and birth partner. Usually, two midwives are present during birth.
